J.W. Anderson, Let's Talk

J.W. Anderson mens fall 2013 collection. Image not my own.
Okay so the part of my life that orbits around fashion got a curve ball chucked at it. When decided what i was going to blog about i had initially settled on a post about my devilishly handsome new mock croc Whistles bag. Yes this is when i was chucked that curve ball which i was previously talking about. The J.W. Anderson mens 2013 collection.
I'm sure those of you who keep an eye on fashion.. actually those of you who just keep your nose in newspaper/news websites will know or have some grasp around this collection and what i'm about to discuss. Right now in London it was the images released by press of the J.W. Anderson show that is bearing the brunt of societies opinion and speculation. The male models who featured in this particular collection were not over powering in masculinity, in fact they were quite likened to muscular, androgynous female model. The male models sport a slicked, side parted hair style not dissimilar of what was seen on the women's fall collections of last year. The most important part of the collection of course is the clothing. The extraordinary mind of J.W. Anderson brings forth a new ideal, challenging and rebelling against the norms of menswear fashion. The collection largely features skirts and shorts with a frilled peplum hem, shift dresses, a selection of oversized coats as well as a few structured ones, straight legged trousers and tight long sleeved t-shirts. The colour palette is simple, bold, yet masculine, in contrast to the feminine clothing, with block colours. I may be contradicting myself by saying this but although the clothing is highly female in the the social normative terms (of what is male and female) but it also implicates a strong feel of masculinity; this is because of the structured garments, a highly androgynous style that is masculine in the sense of style and tailoring. Finishing off the look J.W. Anderson often paired the shorted garments i.e. the peplum hemmed shorts with flat knee high- almost riding- boots.
A selection of controversial looks from the show. Image not my own.
Fashion has always had an amount of controversy and speculation about latest styles, trends and how in particular the wearer of these items showcases it. Remember back to June 1998, David Beckham and that sarong and the fuss that stirred up- now in 2013 he is at the hight of his career. Is J.W. Anderson just creating a sensation a la Beckham or is he instead starting a male fashion revolution? You decide, better yet, let the men decide.
