Take It From Marilyn

Not all fashion films contain black and white, floating fabric, jagged movements an strobe lighting effects. No, they may be seen as 'trendy' but the ones that captivate me and stay constant in my mind are always that fashion films which break the mould- The fun, humours and colourful ones.
A perfect example of this is the newly released Brian Atwood film shot by the most significant pairing behind the lens.. Mert and Marcus. Pulling obvious inspirations from Marilyn Monroe in the last production she would ever participate in and it remained unfinished, "Somethings Gotta Give". If one compares Eva Herzigova in the Brian Atwood SS'13 campaign to Marilyn Monroe in "Somethings Gotta Give" and additionally compares the similarities of the overall settings and narratives between the two films; it becomes obviously clear that the creatives working on this project drew ideas from the unfinished 1962 film. These blatant subjects of inspiration to not lessen my love for the film or cheapen the films originality, for nothing is original anymore. It is the manner and execution and relentless skill that makes this fashion film a great homage to Monroe, the 1962 film and Brian Atwood the brand.

The frivolous nature, gentle glamour and retro humour of this campaign adds to the endearment of it. It is these campaigns and fashion films that stick in my mind due to the bright and charming aesthetics that out-shine the gloomy mood films which clearly dominate the fashion film industry. I also believe that these campaigns highlight a brands aesthetics and spotlight the specific products of that season in a far more memorable and effective way. (Although i do realise it is totally dependant on the brands own ethos and identity as to what type of film they shoot.)

A good note to finish on.... THOSE SHOES... far to divine for words.
